Family Resources

Supporting the Whole Unit

Family members of first responders experience stressors that are unique to a family unit. The requirements of job, inconsistent schedules, long hours, stressful days, news and unpredictability of the responders day impacts partners, children and the family just as much as it impacts the first responder. Hearing about your first responders dangerous or traumatic experiences can create secondary trauma in family members and even make family members feel that they have to protect their first responder from the stress of the family life day to day. At times, the “brotherhood” culture can make families feel isolated.  These things cause extra stress, but knowing what is happening can help families use tools, communication, and supports to cope with these stressors.
